Collins Looking to Overcome Recent Setbacks

It’s been an up and down season so far for World no. 30 Danielle Collins, who will be making her second appearance on the green clay of Charleston.

Collins, who was a quarterfinalist in the tournament in 2019, is 9-9 this season and barring a couple of tournaments she has struggled to get through the early rounds.

Seeded no. 13th in Charleston, the American will be hoping to regain form with her hard-hitting game. Collins’ best this year came in Austin where she made it to the semifinals. However, she could one just one match in Indian Wells and Miami combined.

While Dalma Galfi knocked her out in straight sets in the second round in Indian Wells, she was beaten by Jessica Pegula in round three in Miami after she had begun her campaign with a straight sets second round win in Victoriya Tomova.

A two-time champion on the tour, Collins was the Australian Open finalist last year. She is a tough competitor and will be desperate to get some consistency in her game.

Rogers Looking for Consistency

Just like Collins, Rogers, too, has struggled with consistency this season. The world no. 42 is 11-8, including qualifiers this season, but when it comes to main draws she has a 6-7 record.

Rogers’ best this season saw her reach the quarterfinals in Abu Dhabi. Playing as a qualifier, the 30-year-old defeated Leylah Fernandez and Annett Kontaveit en route the last eight. She has played in six other tournaments this season but has never gone beyond the second round.

Most recently, Rogers won her opening round matches in Indian Wells and Miami, defeating Katie Volynets and Sloane Stephens respectively. However, in both teh tournaments she was sent packing in the second round.

She will be playing in the main draw in Charleston for the ninth time. Her best remains a last eight finish in 2017. Can she go that far this year?

Collins v Rogers Prediction and Tip

Colins has played more on clay than Rogers in recent years. The former also won a clay court title in Palermo two years ago. She is also the one who has been in better form recently. Expect Rogers to put up some resistance but the 13th seed should emerge victorious.
