Kubler Begins Clay Adventure

With his big-hitting style, Jason Kubler is renowned for thriving on hard courts and fast surfaces. But he has won over 200 matches on the red clay on the ITF circuit.

Although the level of competition is lower-grade, Kubler qualified for his first French Open main draw last year at the fourth attempt. He went on to make the second round, losing to Cameron Norrie.

Kubler has enjoyed a great year, highlighted by his ranking jump to a career-high No. 70. He also lifted the Australian Open doubles title on home soil alongside Rinky Hijikata in January.

His clay-court adventure begins in earnest on Monday when he plays an accomplished former top-10 player in Fernando Verdasco.

Verdasco Gets Main Draw Wild Card

Fernando Verdasco gave a plain-spoken assessment of his career and how he would have wished he hit his peak in the current decade, and not the last one where the Big 3 were winning virtually everything.

Still, the Spaniard, now 39, does not have any regrets. He’s won seven career titles –  the last of which came in 2016 and was ranked inside the top 10.

Verdasco was also involved in some high-octane tennis matches, the most memorable of those in the Australian Open in 2009 when he lost a classic to Rafael Nadal in the semifinal.

Now he is outside the top 200, and has relied solely on wild cards to play in the main draw. He has been plying his trade on the Challengers for a few years now, and it is tough to imagine him going on for longer.

He arrives in Houston on the back of three straight main draw defeats.

Kubler v Verdasco Prediction and Tip

This should eb a nailed-on win for the Aussie. Verdasco is way past his peak and has lost his last three matches in a row.
