Begu Is a Three-Time Quarterfinalist

Irina-Camelia Begu looked in great touch in her season opener in Adelaide, where she reached the semifinals, but she has lost form since then.

The world no. 34 heads to Charleston with a 5-6 season record. She will look to improve that record as the season transitions from hard to clay courts, which is Begu’s preferred surface.

Last year, Begu finished with a 20-5 record on clay, across levels. She won the Palermo Open title to pick up her fifth WTA title and also won a WTA 125 title in Bucharest. She has a 2-2 record in clay court finals at the tour level.

The 32-year-old also has a good record in Charleston, reaching the quarterfinals in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and the round of 16 in 2018 and 2022. This will be her sixth main draw appearance in the tournament.

Her current form is a bit of a concern, but she ended a four-match losing streak in the first round in Miami against Alex Eala only to fall in the second round to Qinwen Zheng.

Can she return to form in Charleston?

Galfi Is 7-10 Across Levels This Year

World no. 79 Dalma Galfi is 7-10 across levels this season and she has already featured in a clay court tournament, playing in WTA 125 in San Luis Potosi this week.

Galfi won the first round against Fernanda Contreras Gomez but fell to Kaja Juvan in round 2 of the WTA Challenger event.

Overall Galfi’s best this season came in the indoor courts of Linz, where she went from qualifiers to the quarterfinals. She also played in Indian Wells as a lucky loser and defeated Danielle Collins in the first round.

The Hungarian struggled to win matches at the start of the season, getting off to a 0-4 start, but she is slowly getting into a rhythm.

Over the last few years she has played a lot of her tennis on clay and last her reached her maiden WTA 125 final at the Contrexéville Open.

She will be making her debut in Charleston this year.

Begu v Galfi Prediction and Tip

Begu is the more experienced of the two. Although she has not been in the best of forms recently but she has done well on clay and in Charleston previously and will use all that experience in her opener against the Hungarian.
