J.J. Wolf v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

J.J. Wolf leads the head-to-head 1-0. He defeated Thompson in the first round of this year’s Australian Open in four sets.

Another Early Exit for Wolf

After a promising start to the new season in the Australian summer, things have begun to unravel in the last couple of weeks for J.J. Wolf who could be in a mini-crisis heading to the clay swing.

Wolf reached the second week of a Major for the first time at this year’s Australian Open where he lost in the fourth round to fellow American Ben Shelton.

And two weeks on, he put together a semifinal run in Dallas, losing narrowly to John Isner. But since then, he has won two matches from four tournaments, with some crushing losses in between.

Having broken the world’s top 40 a few months ago, Wolf now finds himself clinging onto his top 50 status and needs a win in Houston to avoid his season spiraling out of control.

Thompson Returns to Clay

Jordan Thompson is the better clay-court player over J.J. Wolf and the odds are almost at evens for the Aussie to win this one. Last year, however, he finished with a negative win-loss record on the surface.

Thomspon lost to Wolf in their only career meeting at this year’s Australian Open, so it might weigh on his mind coming into this match.

The 28-year-old joined the winner’s podium at end of February where he won the Rome Challenger, played on the hard courts in US. And just a few days later, produced one of his best runs at a Masters 1000 tournament.

Thompson reached the third round of Indian Wells, beating former World No. 6 Gael Monfils and current World No. 3 in back-to-back matches. But he has lost his last two main draw matches coming to Houston.

Wolf v Thompson Prediction and Tip

Wolf has little experience on the clay, but he didn’t look out of sorts in his first taste of the surface at Challenger level last year. Thompson, for his part, hardly looked in good spirits on the dirt. This match looks like it will teeter toward three sets.
