Cristian Garin v Hugo Dellien Head to Head

Cristian Garin leads Hugo Dellien 2-1 in their head-to-head. Garin won their last meeting at the Lima Challenger in 2018.

Garin, Former Winner in Houston

Cristian Garin has only played the Houston tournament twice in his career. He won the event on his debut appearance in 2019, beating Casper Ruud in the final. And on his next trip (last year), he lost in the semifinal.

Obviously, Garin’s problems are well documented. At this time last year, a shoulder injury prevented him from playing his best tennis and the pain was unbearable to the extent Garin gave a second thought on whether he should quit the sport.

Thankfully for him, things worked well in the end, and took his time to make a decision. It was in Houston where he managed to turn his career around and he played super clay swing in Europe.  A historic run to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon soon followed, but the second half of the campaign last year was largely disappointing.

Garin fell out of the top 100 at the start of 2023, but that was only briefly, as he showed vast improvement in his game by producing two terrific runs in Indian Wells and Miami, the latter making the second week as a qualifier.

Dellien Picks Up First Title of 2023

Hugo Dellien played in his fifth tournament on the red clay last month, streaking to win the title at the Santiago Challenger, beating Thiago Seyboth Wild in the final.

Given his strong results to start the season, Dellien was a cut above the rest of the field in Chile’s capital, entering every match there as the odds-on favorite.

Dellien has an incredible set of results on the clay. He’s won over 400 matches on the surface in his professional career, most of his wins coming on the ITF and Challenger Tours.

He is 15-5 for the season and will be seeking his first win at the Houston Open.

Garin v Dellien Prediction and Tip

This should be an interesting one. Garin has hit a purple patch it seems, but wouldn’t have smiled at the prospect of taking on a fellow clay-court specialist right off the bat. Still, given his form and record here, he should have the edge.
