Sock Struggling This Season

A former world number eight, Sock looked to have found some sort of a rhythm last year but things have gone awry for him this season again.

The American has featured in only four tournaments this year, including one on the Challenger circuit but has won just two matches. The first came against Ilya Ivashka in Dallas and the second in Indian Wells where he overcame Gregoire Barrere.

Sock then opted out of the Miami Masters and will now switch over to clay, where his record is not too dissimilar from elsewhere.

In fact Sock had won a clay court title last year on the Challenger circuit. It was his last career tournament win but the American wasn’t quite able to translate that into anything fruitful at the French Open that followed.

Can he turn things around on clay in 2023?

Machac Makes it Through the Qualifiers

More known for his exploits in hardcourt competitions where Machac has won all eight of his lower level tournaments. Which is why he would have preferred to do a lot better than what he has this season so far.

Machac hasn’t won a single main draw match at the highest level but his record even on the Challenger circuit has been anything but excellent. In the two such tournaments he’s featured in this season, Machac is 2-2 on win-loss.

A shift to clay will be a toughie given he has won just one main draw match at the highest level on this surface. The good news, however, is the manner in which he qualified for the tournament, winning a couple of qualifiers.

Machac lost just three games in his crushing win over Genaro Alberto Olivieri and then registered a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Brandon Holt in the second qualifier.

Can he carry this form forward though?

Sock v Machac Prediction and Tip

Sock is a whopping 2/1 underdog in this encounter and that is probably to do with his struggles at the highest level and fitness concerns. We think it won’t be that straightforward for Machac though.
