Yannick Hanfmann v Yosuke Watanuki Head to Head

Hanfmann and Watanuki have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Hanfmann Has No Problems Qualifying

Nine of Hanfmann’s titles at the Challenger and ITF level have come on clay, an indicator of how comfortable the German is on that surface.

And that can be seen from his performances this season as well with Hanfmann made the quarterfinal of the Santiago Open after starting out as a qualifier. As compared to that, he is yet to win a main draw match in any of the hardcourt competitions.

Hanfmann also exhibited similar form in order to enter the main draw here.

He was pitted against Enzo Couacaud in his opener and routed him 6-0, 6-3 before overcoming Facundo Diaz Acosta in the second. And with that kind of confidence under his belt, Hanfmann will hope to make it count on his Houston Open debut.

Watanuki More Known for His Hardcourt Play

He is currently at his career-best ranking of 107th in the world but Watanuki will know things could get tougher now that he is playing on clay – a surface he isn’t quite fond of.

This can be seen from the fact that Watanuki has featured in the main draw of just one ATP-level competition on clay.

His lack of experience on clay is the bad part. Now comes the good part in that in the tournament that Watanuki had actually made the main draw, he managed to shock Pedro Martinez in his opener and then defeated Soon-woo Kwon in the second – players who were 4/25 and 2/5 favourites respectively coming into the matches.

Watanuki will now play his first main draw match on clay this season and again, starts a second-favourite. Can he bring his A-game to the court?

Hanfmann v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

Hanfmann starts a favourite and while Watanuki has done what he’s done last year, we think Hanfmann still holds that edge on clay.
