Giron isn’t quite the player on clay as he is in hardcourt competition but one look at him in his opening round match against Emilio Gomez and one wouldn’t have thought like that.
In a match lasting a mere 63 minutes Giron routed Gomez 6-0, 6-2 to seal his second round berth.
He saved a break-point in the first set but in turn, broke his opponent three times to wrap up the first set in 26 minutes. In the second, Giron had a chance to double-bagel his opponent when he raced away to another three breaks of serves.
However, while serving for the match at 5-0, Giron squandered four match-points before dropping his serve. Off the second chance he got to serve for the match, Giron did just that to clinch a spot next to Machac.
This was Giron’s only seventh win on clay to go with 12 defeats. Can he now overcome a player who is 2-2 in main draw of clay court competitions?

Machac Gets Past Sock
Machac was a favourite going into his opening round match against Jack Sock and he lived up to those odds in the end. The 22-year-old followed up his successive qualifier wins with a straight-set victory over his American opponent in the first main draw match.
In a match lasting an hour and a half, Machac carved out a 6-2 6-4 win over Sock to reach the second round of an ATP tournament for the first time this season.
What was so special about Machac’s win was he did not lose his serve even once despite facing four break-points even as he broke Sock three times from the six chances he got.
This was also Machac’s second career win on clay at the highest level, having triumphed in the Davis Cup against Joao Sousa earlier this year. Can he go past a slightly higher-pedigreed opponent here?
