Defending champion Tatjana Maria continued her charge towards another final in Bogota as she knocked out Nuria Brancaccio in the quarterfinal on Friday.
The world no. 66 found the going tough in the first set, with the Italian going toe-to-toe and coming back from a break down twice. But Maria got a third break in the set and then held on to the lead to draw first blood.
The German dominated the second set from the start, going up a double break early and taking a 3-0 lead. Brancaccio did get a break back but Maria broke again late in the set to complete a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
It was the third consecutive straight sets win for Maria in the tournament. She had begun her campaign with a 6-1, 6-4 win over America’s Katrina Scott in the first round and then knocked out Brazil’s Carolina Alves 6-2, 6-4 in the second round.
The 35-year-old improved to 16-10 across levels this season. She had won an ITF tournament in Pune in January and was a quarterfinalist in Hua Hin at the tour level.
Last year, she had won the title by beating Brazil’s Laura Pigossi in the title clash.

Jones Stuns Pigossi
World no. 817 Francesca Jones stunned last year’s runner-up Laura Pigossi on Friday and became the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA semifinal since Patricia Maria Tig reached the 2019 Bucharest final as an unranked qualifier.
Jones beat the world no. 101, 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 33 minutes. Pigossi was the first to break in both the sets but it was the Briton who came back in both the sets to keep her unbelievable run going.
Jones converted 6 of 8 break points and saved 1 of 4. The 22-year-old is an inspirational figure, who was born with a a rare condition, Ectrodactyly Ectodermal Dysplasia, which means she has one thumb and three fingers on each hand, and has only seven toes.
Jones, who is returning to the tour in Bogota after being sidelined for an year, has only played ITF tournaments this year and Friday’s win improved her to 11-6 for the season.
She had begun the tournament with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 victory over Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the first round and then ousted Carol Zhao 6-2, 6-1 in round 2.
