Sebastian Baez v Jack Draper Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Baez and Draper.

Baez Coming off Estoril Quarterfinals

While he would have liked to do a lot better than he eventually did in Estoril, Baez would be reasonably pleased with his form on clay leading up to the season’s second Grand Slam.

He has won 10 of the 14 matches he has played on clay in 2023 including a title that Baez clinched in Cordoba.

A quarterfinal appearance at the Rio Open, a semifinal at Santiago and another quarterfinal last week in Estoril have been his other showings on clay this year. All of those point to a rather consistent performer but one who, ranked 32nd in the world, is itching to dish out a showing to remember on red dirt.

Where he would like to improve on is his performance against some of the top-ranked players in the world.

Like not too many would have expected him to defeat Casper Ruud in Estoril but then again might have expected a better showing than a 6-3, 6-0 rout.

Draper Returns after Indian Wells Injury

Draper looked to have had a sparkling start to his season as he reached the semifinal at the Adelaide International and followed it up with a fourth round appearance at the Indian Wells Masters.

Unfortunately for the Brit, he suffered an abdominal strain in that round of 16 encounter against Carlos Alcaraz and had to retire from the match.

He might not have won that against the eventual winner but he Draper has been out of action since that retirement. He missed the Miami Masters that followed and did not take part in any of the clay events last week either.

To add to that, clay isn’t quite Draper’s thing either. He has played just two matches on this surface and won and lost one apiece. Even on the lower circuits, none of his 11 Challenger and Futures titles have come on clay.

And he will be going up against a clay-court specialist, making it a difficult return for the Brit.

Baez v Draper Prediction and Tip

Baez has our tick for a win here as he looks to carve out a strong start to the French Open tune-up competitions.
