Taylor Fritz v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these two with Wawrinka winning both. Neither match was played on clay and the last time they faced off was almost five years ago.

Fritz Returns to Clay

Fritz isn’t much of a clay-courter, especially when you compare that record with that on other surfaces. And yet, his 25-24 scoreline on dirt isn’t too bad, especially when you see that he was a quarterfinalist at this very tournament last season.

What’s interesting to see is that Fritz is coming here on the back of some consistent form on hardcourt surfaces.

He had made it to the last eight stage at both the first two Masters 1000 tournaments of the year, losing only to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz respectively in the process.

The difference for Fritz on clay is his defeats, at times, have come at the hands of the underdog.

Players like Dominik Koepfer, Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Bernabe Zapata Miralles and Cristian Garin have beaten him over the past couple of seasons – which gives us a pattern. Fritz has had his difficulties against lower-ranked players who are dirtballers.

Wawrinka has had his moments under the sun on clay, making it a tough one for Fritz here.

Wawrinka Slugs Past Griekspoor

It wasn’t the easiest of victories for Wawrinka but he would be mighty pleased with his effort to still have the firepower that he does.

The 38-year-old needed 18 points as he served for the match at 5-4 in the final set and frittered away five match-points before clinching a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win in two hours and 28 minutes against Tallon Griekspoor.

Wawrinka faced a whopping 12 break-points in the encounter and was broken twice – including once in the final set – but the Swiss veteran managed to keep his nerve to register his 10th win of the season.

Having gotten knocked out in the first round at this tournament last year and with just two victories on clay since 2020, this win would be a relief.

What would motivate him to overcome Fritz is his opponent’s record on clay and his own desire to get into the top 50 of the rankings to avoid playing some of the top players in tournament openers.

Fritz v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

Fritz starts a favourite but Wawrinka can be expected to push him and we are anticipating a three-setter here.
