Casper Ruud v Botic van de Zandschulp Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two players and surprisingly, van de Zandschulp leads 3-1. On clay, it’s 1-1 with Ruud winning in Rome last year after having lost in Munich in 2022.

Ruud Coming off Estoril Title Win

It wasn’t the most straightforward of titles he has won so far in his career but Ruud dug deep into his reserves and found a way to make it his 10th ATP tournament win in Estoril.

The Norwegian number one had come into the season without the kind of pre-season training that he would have liked, something he admitted was the reason behind his underwhelming results all year.

He had then given the South American swing a skip, a set of four tournaments he has done well at in the past but that did not help him too much at the Acapulco Open, Indian Wells Masters and Miami Masters where he notched up a win-loss record of 3-3.

It was with this kind of a background that Ruud entered the European clay court swing. He faced a three-setter against Joao Sousa in his opener, was taken to three sets by Quentin Halys where he needed a final set tie-breaker to come through before finally getting past Miomir Kecmanovic to scoop up the title.

Can he continue this run into the Monte-Carlo Masters where he was a semifinalist in 2021?

van de Zandschulp Overcomes Slow Start against Fucsovics

There were always signs that van de Zandschulp couldn’t be counted out in his first round match against Marton Fucsovics. We had a sense that the Dutchman would make things difficult for his opponent, winning at least a set and that’s exactly how it turned out.

Van de Zandschulp went on to overturn a one-set deficit to defeat Fucsovics 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-1 in two hours and 39 minutes to seal his maiden win at this competition.

Broken thrice in the first set, van de Zandschulp went on to fall 0-3 behind in the second set as well. At that stage, a win looked like a distant possibility but van de Zandschulp’s sustained him throughout the match.

He broke right back in the fifth game, saved a break-point in the very next game and then swatted away two match-points on his own serve. A frustrated Fucsovics lost the ensuing tie-breaker and sensing an opportunity, van de Zandschulp then got the better of his serve in the fourth and sixth game of the decider.

This was Van de Zandschulp’s first win on clay for 2023, following his opening defeat in Estoril last week.
