Daniil Medvedev v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2023 Adelaide International where Medvedev won in straight sets.

Medvedev Hoping to Overturn Clay Record

It’s almost bizarre that a player of the capability of Medvedev has the kind of record he does on clay.

A four-time Grand Slam finalist, the winner of the US Open title, and having also clinched five ATP Masters 1000 titles, Medvedev has done almost nothing of note on clay.

He did make the semifinal at this tournament in 2019, but his overall record in clay court competitions at the Masters level is 6-9. That semifinal aside his best showing between Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome Masters is a third round appearance in Spain.

This new season gives new hope though.

Medvedev enters this tournament on the back of a 29-3 win-loss record for the season, with a whopping five tournament finals in row. He has won four of them, including the Miami Masters where he defeated Jannik Sinner in the final.

Can he shrug off his clay court inadequacies aside? Could well see that happen this season.

Sonego Huffs & Puffs Past Humbert

It took Sonego nearly three hours and three sets but he did manage to find a way past Ugo Humbert in the first round of this tournament.

Sonego carved out a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 win despite losing his serve four times and being down four match-points in the decider. It was his sheer fighting spirit that helped the Italian register the victory in his first match on clay this season.

What was so remarkable to watch was Humbert had a chance to serve for the match at 5-4 in both, the second and third sets. And both times, Sonego fought back to break his opponent and then made it two breaks in a row to clinch the win.

This is the fourth successive time that Sonego has made the second round in Monte-Carlo but since entering the quarterfinal in 2019, he hasn’t gone past this stage here.

Against Medvedev, he will give himself that chance given the Russian’s obvious discomfiture on this surface but the world number five looks determined to succeed on clay for once.

Medvedev v Sonego Prediction and Tip

While Sonego will have a chance we will back Medvedev here for a win. Might go to a third set though.
