Jannik Sinner v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and it came at the 2022 Antwerp Open. Sinner had won that easily.

With a title win under his belt this season and a couple of other final appearances, Sinner has continued to exhibit his potential on a regular basis in his career. And it was no different in 2023 as he rode into the semifinal of the Indian Wells Masters and then went one better in Miami by making it to the final.

It took the class of Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev to get the better of the Italian number one.

Sinner’s performances on clay have not been too bad either. In fact, he enters this tournament on the back of a four-match winning streak on clay and having won 10 of his last 12 matches on this surface.

A title win at Umag immediately after his fourth round retirement defeat at the 2022 French Open had come against Alcaraz – another indicator he can change things around his way on this surface.

Having reached the quarterfinal here last season, Sinner will hope he can do better in 2023.

Schwartzman Finally Wins on Clay

It’s hard to believe Schwartzman has had such a wretched run of form on clay. Coming into the Monte-Carlo Masters, the three-time French Open quarterfinalist and a Rome Masters finalist had won none of the previous five matches he’d played on clay this year.

Yes, you read that right. Five matches played at Cordoba, Buenos Aires, Rio, Santiago and last week in Estoril had all led to defeats. In fact at the Estoril Open he had gone into his opening match against Marco Cecchinato as a 2/5 favourite and yet crashed out in straight sets.

Which is why the relief of a win on his favourite surface.

It came against David Goffin and did not take Schwartzman too long as he came through 6-4, 6-2 to enter the second round.

He will now see a huge change in the opposition quality and one wonders if the turning of corner might help him a tad here.

Sinner v Schwartzman Prediction and Tip

While Schwartzman did find a way to register his maiden win on dirt for the season, Sinner can be expected to prove too good for him here.
