Lorenzo Sonego v Ugo Humbert Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in the 2021 Rogers Cup and Humbert had won that one.

Sonego Opens His Clay Court Campaign

More known for his performances on clay, Sonego will be playing in his first ever match on this surface this season.

Before this, Sonego had featured in nine tournaments, all of which came on hardcourt surfaces, and ended with a mere eight wins. The good news for Sonego was that he finally exhibited some form the last time he was on court, i.e. at the Miami Masters.

Wins over Dominic Thiem, Dan Evans and Frances Tiafoe helped Sonego reach the fourth round where he squandered a first set win to lose to Francisco Cerundolo.

A quarterfinalist here in 2019, Sonego will now hope to emulate his performances at the previous editions of the Monte-Carlo Masters where he had made the second round.

Humbert Shocks Lajovic in Qualifiers

Before coming into this tournament, Humbert had won a mere eight matches on clay and lost 18 of them.

Which is also why he seemed to struggle against the 449th-ranked Lucas Catarina in the first qualifier before making it through. In the second round, Humbert went into his encounter against Dusan Lajovic as a distant 2/1 to win it.

And that’s exactly how it turned out as Humbert overturned a first set deficit to squeak past Lajovic in the qualifiers.

What that means is this is the third successive season in which Humbert will take part in the main draw of the Monte-Carlo Masters. Unfortunately for him he has never won a match here and coming up against Sonego, it sounds like it would be rather difficult to do that now.

Sonego v Humbert Prediction and Tip

Backing Sonego to usurp Humbert despite the latter’s momentum. Won’t be a straightforward win though.
