Albert Ramos-Vinolas v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two players and both have won two apiece. In the only match they played on clay, it was Ramos-Vinolas who came away a winner in Barcelona in 2013.

Ramos-Vinolas on a Five-Match Losing Streak

It’s been a very forgettable season for Ramos-Vinolas so far and he enters this tournament on the back of five successive losses.

While two of those came in hardcourt competitions, what makes it worse for the Spaniard is that three of the defeats were in clay court competitions, a surface he has loved playing all his career.

This includes a first round defeat at the hands of Jurij Rodionov last week in Estoril, where he was 7/20 to win it but still went down after having grabbed the first set.

A couple of wins in Cordoba and another two in Rio are the only wins to Ramos-Vinolas’ name this year, as he has managed to suffer 11 defeats in total. Quite clearly, there would be a few question-marks arising in the 35-year-old’s mind.

The 2017 finalist at this tournament now faces an opponent who hasn’t played a lot on clay this season but has been in good form in his own right. Can he shrug off his own shocking displays and win it here?

Struff Surprise Qualifier

Struff had a couple of difficult qualifying encounters but he registered victories against Emil Ruusuvuori and Juan Pablo Varillas to make it to the main draw here.

The German, who began his clay court journey of the season at Marrakesh, had lost his opener there to Hug Gaston. On the other hand, in hardcourt competitions spread across ATP qualifiers and the Challenger circuit, Struff has a 22-8 win-loss record this season.

This is not to say that Struff isn’t much of a clay court player having won his last career title on the Challenger circuit on clay. This came last year in Braunschweig.

What’s interesting to note is as a result of the aforementioned he actually starts off a favourite here by some distance. That being said, it’s tough to count Ramos-Vinolas out.

Ramos-Vinolas v Struff Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be a gripping contest that goes to the third set.
