Popyrin and Lajovic will be facing off for the first time.

Popyrin Makes it Through the Qualifiers

It took Popyrin some difficulties in order to make it to the Monte-Carlo but he did so for the first time since 2021.

The Aussie overcame Vit Kopriva and Benoit Paire in his qualifiers from being a set down in both those matches to enter the first round where he will take on an opponent nearly 30 places ahead of him on the rankings.

Before this, his only previous appearance on clay this season came in Marrakesh with the world number 95 making it to the second round there. He fell to Dan Evans in the second round in straight sets.

Overall, Popyrin has won a mere five clay c0urt matches in the main draws of tournaments in his career to go with six defeats. And facing a player who has already three quarterfinals in clay court events, Popyrin would be up against a tough challenge.

Lajovic Enters in as a Lucky Loser

Having made a solid start to the clay court season in South American earlier this season, Lajovic was expected to cruise through to the main draw here. But the 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters finalist was beaten by Ugo Humbert in the second qualifier despite being a set up.

That he has made it to the main draw is as much down to him being a lucky loser as it is to it being a deserving entry.

Lajovic had earlier ended up being a quarterfinalist at Argentina Open, Rio Open and Santiago Open, with some sterling performances. He has had wins over Sebastian Baez, Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Juan Pablo Varillas and Laslo Djere on clay in 2023, four tricky opponents on this surface.

Which is also why he starts quite the favourite in this one against the lower-ranked Aussie.

Popyrin v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

While Popyrin isn’t one to give up easily and Lajovic is coming into this main draw match as a lucky loser, we are looking at the Serb easing his way into the second round.
