Alexander Zverev v Roberto Bautista-Agut Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between these two players and Zverev leads 4-2. On clay it’s 1-1 but it’s worth noting that their last meeting came nearly five years ago.

Zverev Stretched by Bublik

Zverev was an overwhelming favourite coming up against Alexander Bublik but his form has been a bit patchy since the time he returned to the tour following his horrific injury last year. And that looked to be the case even in the first round match here.

The encounter lasted more than two hours with Zverev finally coming through 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to set up his second round meeting in a competition he has been a semifinalist at twice before.

Following a fourth round loss at the Indian Wells Masters and a second round ouster in Miami, Zverev made a slow start with his serve as he was broken twice in the opening set.

He retaliated with three breaks of his own, dropping his serve once again though, to level the proceedings. The two players traded breaks of serve to get to 3-3 in the final set but it was in the 10th game as Bublik served to stay in the match that Zverev put his opponent’s serve under pressure and carve out the victory.

The German will gain some confidence from that victory as he takes on an otherwise out-of-sorts Bautista-Agut in round two.

Bautista-Agut Saves Match-Point against Krajinovic

Filip Krajinovic had entered the tournament as a lucky loser but for a while it looked like he was about to show Bautista-Agut the exit door.

This was after the Serb had won the first set and then helped himself to a match-point in the second tie-breaker that followed. Krajinovic himself had saved five set-points by then – including four in the tie-breaker – but failed to seize on the chance he got.

Bautista-Agut saved the match-point and off the sixth set-point, converted it to level the encounter with a 12-10 win in the tie-breaker.

With a renewed confidence for the Spaniard and Krajinovic’s game now deflated, three breaks of serve followed to give Bautista-Agut a 5-7, 7-6 (10), 6-1 win in two hours and 53 minutes.

This was his first win on clay for the season, having earlier lost to Quentin Halys in Estoril last week.

Things are going to get a lot tougher against Zverev now.

Zverev v Bautista-Agut Prediction and Tip

We expect Zverev to find his rhythm and claim his place in the third round with a straight-set win. Bautista-Agut has the experience to challenge his opponent and we could see one of the sets go into a tie-breaker as well but that will be the extent of that.
