Novak Djokovic v Lorenzo Musetti Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Djokovic has won every single time. One of these matches came on clay at Roland-Garros in 2021 and had gone to five sets.

Djokovic Shrugs off Slow Start

It took Djokovic some time to get going in his first match on clay for the season but once he had discovered his rhythm there was no looking back against Ivan Garkhov.

Djokovic was a break down in the first set but found parity in the very next game before winning it in the ensuing tie-breaker to take the lead. Even in the second set, Garkhov held on till the fourth game but Djokovic clawed back to his best performance and took control from that point on.

In the end, the world number one kick-started his clay court debut for 2023 with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win to seal his third round berth.

The Serb would later go on to admit he wasn’t at his best in the first set and the swirling windy conditions did make it any easier for him.

As is the case with Djokovic usually, he goes from strength to strength as the tournament goes along and this was probably just the kind of working over he needed to kick-start his proceedings.

Musetti in a Rare Double-Bagel

Musetti was a favourite going up against his fellow Italian player Luca Nardi but not in his wildest dreams would he have imagined the kind of scoreline on show.

The world number 21 carved out a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Nardi having also bagelled Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round. And while Musetti did face one break-point in the encounter, he easily saved that and got the better of his opponent in a mere 52 minutes.

What’s interesting to note is Musetti had started the season off with four wins on the bounce but since then had won just two more matches from seven tournaments.

Coming into his opener here, Musetti was barely a favourite against Kecmanovic but these two results would have given him the early confidence he needed on clay.

While Djokovic is a different beast, Musetti will hope he can put up a fight here.

Djokovic v Musetti Prediction and Tip

Djokovic is 1/5 to win this and the only reason why he isn’t even shorter than those odds is because Musetti had pushed him into five sets in their only previous meeting on clay. Expecting the Serb to win in two this time.
