Milos Raonic v Marcos Giron Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between Raonic and the 25-year-old Giron who had to qualify for the event and is ranked 217th in the world.
Poor Showings Post Australian Open for Raonic
Things looked like they had hit crescendo for Raonic when he made it to the quarter-final at the Australian Open after beating Alexander Zverev before that. However, a shock loss to Lucas Pouille at that stage was followed by a second round defeat to Stan Wawrinka in Rotterdam and an opening loss against Jan-Lennard Struff.
After the first round bye at the Indian Wells Masters, he was also stretched by unseeded Sam Querrey but the good news is that he is through to this third round match and would be facing an opponent ranked outside the top 200.
And if he does win this one, there’s one of Struff or Zverev waiting to take him in their fourth round match, two opponents he has played as recently as this year.

Humongous Achievement for Giron
It can well be described as a crazy past week or so for Marcos Giron, who is used to playing at the Futures and the Challengers alone and in his entire career, he had won just one match at the highest level. A former UCLA player and one to turn pro about five years ago, this was Giron’s first appearance even in the qualifiers of an ATP tournament this season.
Things looked like they were getting better for Giron when he notched up his first ever Challengers title win – he has 10 Futures titles to his name too – earlier this year. From the lows of not having won any Challenger titles before this year to qualifying for the Indian Wells Masters by beating two players in three, tough sets, and then to overcome Jeremy Chardy and Alex de Minaur in the first two rounds of this tournament, life has come a full circle for Giron.
He might not have much of a chance against Raonic, but he is already set to earn a decent pay package, and it would be interesting to see whether he can use the pressure-free scenario to trouble Raonic.
