Elias Ymer v Abedellah Shelbayh Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 27 year old Swede, and the 19 year old Jordanian.

Ymer Aiming for Another Second Round

Ymer’s one senior title remains the doubles that he clinched with younger brother Mikael back on home soil in Stockholm more than six years ago now.

Since then, his successes have been restricted to the Challenger tour, although it has been more than four years ago since his last victory at that level, albeit he did reach a final in 2022 in Parma.

He arrived in Bosnia having recently reached the second round of a senior ATP tournament for the second time this year in Marrakech, where he came through two rounds of qualifying, and then beat a local wildcard before losing in three sets to Tallon Griekspoor.

Since then he played in a Challenger event in Split, where again he reached the second round after qualifying, and now he has the chance to at least emulate that feat.

Not that he made it easy for himself, taking three sets to see off the challenge of the Bosnian world number Nerman Fatic in the first round of qualifying.

Fortunately for him he was able to beat his second round opponent, Francesco Maestrelli of Italy, comparatively more easily, getting the job done in straight sets.

Teenage Jordanian Shelbayh Achieves Another Milestone

Shelbayh is the first player from his country to attain a world ranking.

It has already been a season to remember for the teenager. In February he reached his first ever Challenger singles final, before finally losing to the experienced Thanasi Kokkinakis in an event in Bahrain.

And then he made his main tour debut in Qatar after receiving a wildcard, losing in the first round to Soon woo Kwon of South Korea.

Earlier this month he won his maiden Challenger doubles title in Spain, and now he has made the main draw in Banja Luka as well, booking his spot by beating in qualifying first Fabian Marozsan of Hungary (the winner of this tournament last year when it was still  a Challenger event) and then Lukas Klein of Slovakia, a man ranked 126 places above him in the world.

The fact that he did it in straight sets as well, will add to his growing confidence that he can make main draws without the benefits of wildcards.

Ymer v Shelbayh Prediction and Tip

Shelbayh is still a novice when it comes to the main draws of senior ATP events, whereas Ymer has a lot more experience and street craft, and that should be enough to get the Swede over the line eventually.
