Djokovic Hoping to Shrug off Shock Monte-Carlo Exit

With Djokovic not being allowed to feature in the Indian Wells Masters and Miami Masters because of his vaccinations status, he finally returned to competitive tennis at the Monte-Carlo Masters to kick-start his European clay court swing.

The French Open is on the line, especially now that Rafael Nadal is showing signs of his fitness becoming a concern more and more regularly, giving Djokovic a better look at the trophy.

And how the world number one goes about his business in the lead-up to the season’s second Grand Slam will make for an interesting viewing.

Djokovic did not have the best start to the clay swing when he lost to Lorenzo Musetti in the third round there after having struggled through his previous round against Ivan Gakhov as well. Those can be put down to early clay season rustiness though and by all account, there shouldn’t be too much to worry in this one.

Van Assche Stuns Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka’s goal these days is to get himself a better ranking in a bid to avoid playing some of the top players in the world very early in tournaments. Unfortunately for him, he fell to the 87th-ranked Luca Van Assche in the first round itself.

The 18-year-old Van Assche has already shown what he is capable of, having risen to his career-best ranking of 87th in the world thanks to his performances on the Challenger circuit.

Last year, he had won his maiden Futures circuit tournament and followed that up with a title win at the Maia Challenger.

This year, Van Assche has added a couple more of those Challenger tournament wins, claiming the Pau Challenger and San Remo Challenger titles.

And a 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Wawrinka is something Van Assche definitely needed to continue on the right track of proving to be a difficult opponent to overcome. Playing Djokovic will be an experience of its own and one that will come with a lot of learning though.

Djokovic v Van Assche Prediction and Tip

Djokovic should be able to shrug off his previous loss and claim this in two.
