Rune had his chances in the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters against Andrey Rublev and while he lost in three, he would still be happy with his overall performance at the tournament.
The Danish number one, as a result of his second appearance in the final of a Masters 1000 tournament, rose to seventh in the world for the first time in his career.
And it has been fully deserved too after Rune followed up his showing at the Paris Masters last season by slowly working his way up his performances in 2023.
Mind you, Rune hasn’t won a title this season but has dished out enough of the good stuff already. Like when he made the fourth round at the Australian Open and semifinal in Acapulco.
More recently, he went down to Taylor Fritz in the fourth round of the Miami Masters as well before finally breaking the barrier and making the final in Monte-Carlo. Wins over Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner would have given him a huge boost of confidence.

Hanfmann Needs Some Time to Go Past Monteiro
Hanfmann was a 11/20 favourite going into his opening round match here against Thiago Monteiro but was stretched to the limits by the Brazilian player.
In a match lasting nearly three hours, Hanfmann came through 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-2 in a cagey clash that saw very little to choose between the two players in the first couple of sets.
A break up in the fifth game of the match, Hanfmann dropped his serve in the sixth before losing the set in a tie-breaker. Incidentally, neither player would manage another break of serve between that sixth game of the opening set and the start of the third.
Once Hanfmann had levelled off the scores, the momentum shifted drastically with German breaking his opponent twice in a row in the third set to go 4-0 up. He soon wrapped up his win, following up from his semifinal appearance at the Houston Open.
