Cobolli Stuns Otte

He is 20 years old and has never been ranked better than 133rd in the world but Cobolli looked to be part as he crashed Oscar Otte’s party in their second round match.

Having earlier sent Jordan Thompson out in straight sets, the Italian qualifier came through in an hour and 47 minutes to clinch a three-set win. Cobolli won 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 in the second round to double his career victory count at the highest level.

With just two main draw wins in his career before the start of this tournament, Cobolli looked to be in the kind of form that he would have been mighty pleased with as he romped through the first set in a mere 31 minutes.

Otte responded with a crucial break in the eighth game of the second set but Cobolli came back with one in the fourth game of the third to finish off the encounter. Cobolli lost just seven points on serve in that set.

What can Cobolli do in his quarterfinal match?

O’Connell Shocker for Zverev

O’Connell was a whopping 17/4 underdog going into his second round match against Alexander Zverev but still managed to come through in straight sets.

Having overcome Ugo Humbert in the first round, O’Connell was on court for nearly two hours as he sneaked past his German opponent 7-6 (2), 6-4 to cement his second successive quarterfinal berth of the season.

He had earlier made it to the last eight at the Marrakesh Open as well.

Surviving nine aces and two breaks of serves in the encounter, O’Connell raced off to a 4-0 lead in the first set tie-breaker and then broke Zverev in the crucial ninth game of the second set. A flummoxed German failed to break back to go down in two.

Can O’Connell now continue with this run to make it to his first ATP semifinal since the San Diego Open last September?

Cobolli v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

This could be a close-run match but O’Connell’s experience would help him and we could see the Aussie coming through here.
