Aryna Sabalenka v Paula Badosa Head to Head

Badosa leads 2-1 head to head. She won both the matches in 2021 but it was Sabalenka who won the last meeting in the Stuttgart semifinal last year.

Sabalenka Cruises Into the Last Eight

A runner-up in the last two years, second seed Aryna Sabalenka began her 2023 Stuttgart campaign with a straight sets win over Barbora Krejcikova in the round of 16 on Wednesday.

The world no. 2 served 10 aces and converted 3 of 8 break points in the match. She did not allow the Czech a single break point as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory in an hour and 17 minutes.

Sabalenka is playing in her sixth tournament of the year and in all six she has reached at least the quarterfinals. The Belarusian won the titles in Adelaide and the Australian Open and finished runner-up in Indian Wells. She bowed out of the last eight stage in Dubai and Miami.

Playing her first clay court tournament of the year, Sabalenka is off to a flying start. She will be hoping to keep the form going as she aims to reach a third consecutive Stuttgart final. In 2021, the 12-time tour-level champion went down to Ashleigh Barty in the final, while last year, it was Iga Swiatek who ousted her in the title clash.

Will it be third time lucky for her? She won’t be looking too far just yet as she faces a strong opponent in the quarterfinal on Friday.

Badosa Breezes Past Bucsa

After scoring a crushing 6-1, 6-1 win over seventh seed Daria Kasatkina in the first round, Paula Badosa moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-2 thrashing of Cristina Bucșa in round two.

The world no. 31 saved 5 of 6 break points and capitalised on 5 of 9 breaking opportunities to beat the fellow Spaniard in an hour and 11 minutes.

Badosa, who was a semifinalist in Stuttgart last year, is 11-5 in 2023 and 5-1 on clay this season. She was a quarterfinalist in Charleston and her best this season was a run to the semifinals in Adelaide-2. However, she suffered an abductor injury in the quarterfinal in that tournament and withdrew from the semifinal contest and subsequently also pulled out of the Australian Open.

She had a quiet run on return, but is back in form on clay. She faces an uphill task in the quarterfinal against an in-form Sabalenka. Can she pull of a surprise win?

Sabalenka v Badosa Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka is in red-hot form this season and has an excellent record in Stuttgart. Expect her to keep charging towards a third consecutive final in the tournament.
