Kyle Edmund v Radu Albot Head to Head

These two have played each other three times and every time, the British player has won. Even more positive for Edmund is the fact he is yet to drop a set to Albot, having beaten him in a Challenger in 2015, Hong Kong Open in 2016 and the Marrakech Open in 2018.

Kyle Edmund on a Comeback Trail

After three successive years of having not made it past the second round at this competition, this represents Edmund’s best chance to push forward to the fourth here. And that would be a good turnaround for Edmund, who hasn’t had the best of times till about a week before the start of the Indian Wells Masters.

Ranked number one in Britain, Edmund has endured a horrid time, with a viral fatigue followed by a tonsils surgery, and then a knee issue causing all kinds of problems. Making it worse for Edmund was his coach Fidde Rosengren’s resignation from his role recently.

His start to the season was hampered in some measure by all these problems and the result was a woeful record – he had played two matches and lost both including a first round loss at the hands of Tomas Berdych at the Australian Open. However, things look like they might have changed for the better now.

Edmund won the Indian Wells Challenger before this competition, with a straight-set win in the final over Andrey Rublev and called the win as one that could get things moving. And they did get moving a tad as he registered his first ever victory of the year in an ATP tournament when he downed Nicolas Jarry. Now, can he push even further?

Albot’s Best Showing at Indian Wells

Already, the 53rd-ranked Albot, by reaching the third round, showcased his best performance not just at the Indian Wells Masters but also in the Masters competition.

What would have made this even more special he needed to make it through the qualifying rounds to make it to the main draw before winning both his first two rounds in straight sets – he beat Marius Copil 6-2, 6-2 and then crushed Fabio Fognini 6-0, 7-6 to make it through to the third round.

Edmund represents an even tougher challenge but for the first ever Moldovan to win an ATP title, it could well be a chance to get himself another first – make it to the fourth round of a Masters tournament or above, having appeared in the third round of the 2017 US Open.
