John Isner v Guido Pella Head to Head
In their only previous encounter, Pella had defeated Isner in three sets at the ATP Rio in 2016. It was anyone’s game till the very end with Pella needing two tie-breakers including 10-8 in the final set tie-breaker to win the match.
Isner Warming up to the Task
After a slow start to the season, American Isner is slowly getting into his own and the by the looks of things, that first tournament might not be very far. He started off with back-to-back opening exits in Auckland and Australian Open but that was followed by three successive semi-final appearances
At the New York Open he had an opening bye before he overcame Bernard Tomic and Jordan Thompson before going down to Reilly Opelka for the second time in as many weeks. The Delray Beach Open also ended in a semi-final defeat, as he went down to Dan Evans and then at Acapulco, things looked to be going his way till he met the man on a roll – Nick Kyrgios.
A fighting three-setter ensued and it went to a final tie-breaker which the Aussie was able to win – again a sense of Isner unable to close out matches that get really close. He was a straight-set winner over Alexei Popyrin in the second round here at the Indian Wells Masters but the question now is if he can get things done quickly against Pella too or will he need another three-setter.

Pella on His Highest Ranking
This is Pella’s career-best ranking, 34th in the world and it has been possible thanks to his showing on clay. But first things first and his showing on clay came after he had lost two of three matches he had featured on hard-court surfaces leading up to the Australian Open.
With the year’s first major out of the way, the Argentine has feature on clay alone before this tournament. And he has excelled on it too.
At Cordoba, in his home country, Pella reached the final with wins that included one over Diego Schwartzman in the quarter-finals. A first round exit followed at ATP Rio but he came back strong and stormed to the final of the Sao Paulo Open last week which he went on to win by beating Christian Garin in the final.
It was Pella’s first ever title, made him a seeded player at Indian Wells as a result and gave him a first round bye. In the second round he needed a stiff three-setter to defeat Alex Bolt with a change in the surface being an obvious issue.
John Isner v Guido Pella Predictions & Tips
Life would be tough for Pella outside clay and we think Isner will run through Pella in straight sets to make the third round. That is also why Isner is 19/20 to win it in straight sets.
Tip: Isner to win in straight sets: 19/20 (William Hill)
