Fabio Fognini v Oscar Otte Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and that came at the Belgrade Open in 2022. Fognini had won it in straight sets.

Fognini 2-8 for the Season

As recently as in April 2021 Fognini was still a top 20 player but two years on, he has fallen out of the top 100. In fact it was for the first time in 14 years that Fognini finds himself ranked outside the top 100, having made that transition last week.

This was after Fognini was unable to participate in the Monte-Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open because of fitness issues but it wasn’t like the Italian was winning too much before that.

In the eight tournaments Fognini has played this season, he has won a sum total of two matches. Those came in the first round of the Rio Open and Estoril Open but those apart he hasn’t done too much of note.

And he now heads into a tournament where his best career performance has been a third round appearance in 2019. He does face a player who isn’t known for his clay court maneuvers but given Fognini’s form and fitness, it might not be the easiest start.

Otte Struggles Continue to Mount

While Otte will be rather chuffed with his first round win at Barcelona that came over the dirtballer Sebastian Baez, his overall form for the season has been anything but exhilarating.

Otte, who had won the first match of the season at the United Cup earlier this year, followed it up with only two main draw wins coming into the Barcelona Open last week. At the Monte-Carlo he failed to make it through the main draw either, losing to Luca Nardi in the qualifiers.

Which is why, while his victory against Baez was shocking, it did not do too much to change his fortunes around as Otte lost to unfancied Flavio Cobolli in the very next round.

He now starts off a favourite here but that’s only because his opponent’s form has been even worse. That coupled with Fognini’s injury does give Otte a rare chance to make the second round of a Masters 1000 tournament on clay.

Fognini v Otte Prediction and Tip

Otte might not be in the best of touches all year we expect him to edge past Fognini given the Italian’s struggles. Expect a gruelling match that goes in Otte’s favour.
