Xinyu Wang v Jule Niemeier Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 21 year old Chinese woman, and the German, who is two years older.

First Clay Court Event of the Year for Wang

Wang is better known as a doubles player. She has appeared in six WTA finals – including two this year in Hua Hun and Merida – and won two titles. In terms of singles, she has won six ITF tournaments, one of them on clay last year in Spain.

Unlike her opponent, though, she has been in reasonable recent form. Wang reached her first semi-final of the year in Thailand, and made the third round in Indian Wells before losing to Barbora Krejikova.

From there Wang travelled to Miami, where she was knocked out in the second round by Karolina Pliskova.

She has not played since, and this will be her first clay court tournament of the year for the Chinese player.

Niemeier Has Not Win Since Austria

Niemeier began the year looking to build on the achievements of 2002, which included breaking into the top 100 for the first her, her maiden WTA 125k title, and her Grand Slam debut in Paris.

She would go on to reach the quarter-finals in Wimbledon and the fourth round at the US Open.

It has been a struggle to replicate those achievements so far this season though. The best she has managed are back to back successive second round appearances in Lyon and Linz.

In fact, she has not won a match of any kind since Austria, suffering six successive first round defeats, including the clay court events in Charleston and Stuttgart.

Indeed, in that sequence, Niemeier has only won a single set of tennis.

Wang v Niemeier Prediction and Tip

Although Wang will be playing in her first clay court event of the year and it may take her a little time to acclimatise, she is playing an opponent who is in the middle of a long losing run at the moment.

That makes the Chinese woman the clear favourite to make the second round.
