Alex Molcan v Yibing Wu Head to Head

Alex Molcan and Yibing Wu have not played each other before this.

Molcan Makes Banja Luka Semis

Alex Molcan put together his best result of 2023, reaching the semifinals at Banja Luka Open. Molcan came through a trio of three-setters during the week, the toughest of which was his quarterfinal win over Lalso Djere where he stormed back from 3-5 down in the decider to win it.

Molcan, however, was no match for Monte Carlo champion Andrey Rublev who breezed past him in straight sets.

Prior to last week, Molcan was 6-9 in main draw matches and couldn’t solidify his top 50 year-end ranking. He has since slipped to 58th in the rankings, but if Banja Luka was anything to go by, we know Molcan will be looking to sow even more fruitful weeks on clay, starting with Madrid.

He plays Yibbing Wu who sits just one spot above him in the rankings.

Wu Chasing First Win Since Miami

Yibing Wu is officially the highest-ranked Chinese man in tennis history. But I guess the question everybody is asking prior to this match is have the wheels gone off?

Back in February, Wu shocked the tennis world by becoming China’s first ATP titlist when he stormed to win the Delray Beach Open. He defeated an incredible lineup of hardcourt performers including Denis Shapovalov, Taylor Fritz, and the ATP ace king John Isner in a remarkable final.

That achievement has definitely unlocked potential commercial success off the court. He’s a big thing back home in China and with Tour returning there later this year, Wu is guaranteed a hero’s welcome.

But with just two wins in his last five matches, Wu’s confidence looks shot ahead of the Madrid Masters.

Molcan v Wu Prediction and Tip

Wu is in dire form and we can’t see him causing Molcan too much trouble on clay. Any other result would be a major shock here.
