This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Gracheva at a Career-High

Varvara Gracheva is having quite a season. She is now 22-12 and ranked World No. 43 – a career-best ranking for the 22-year-old Russian.

It will be interesting to see if she can carry forward this same momentum on clay courts. Her success of 2023 has come in hard-court tournaments, notably her runner-up feat in Austin and fourth-round stints in Miami and Indian Wells – both as a qualifier. In the two events, Gracheva dismissed a few big names like Daria Kasatkina, Petra Martic, and Ons Jabeur.

Varvara last played in the Charleston Open, where she lost to Magda Linette in round two.

That said, she has eight ITF finals to her name, so perhaps, that can help her out in Madrid this week?

Wang in a Rut

While Xiyu Wang of China may be of the same age as Gracheva, her season has been entirely different.

Her tally stands at 3-8, with each of those victories coming in Merida, Indian Wells, and Miami. In her last tournament in Charleston, Wang was handed an opening-round defeat at the hands of Hailey Baptiste.

Now ranked World No. 65, Wang has got some clay pedigree to take inspiration from. Her last season was built mainly on this surface (23-10) – on the back of which she reached the top 50.

Xiyu was a runner-up in Valencia Challenger, along with three other ITF clay tournaments. Compared to her opponent, the Chinese player is not quite at the same level yet. This is only evident from her lack of big wins in top-tier tournaments.

Gracheva v Wang Prediction and Tip

This match is Gracheva’s to lose; she has got everything going on at the moment, and it is hard to imagine her succumbing to Wang. Expect a one-sided affair.
