Moutet Returns after Australian Open

After an interesting previous season in which Moutet hit a career-best ranking of 51st in the world and was also hit by hefty fines for his on-court behaviour, the Frenchman would have been looking forward to the start of 2023 to try and build on his fortunes.

Unfortunately for him, all he has done this season is play two matches and won and lost one apiece. Both had come at the Australian Open following which Moutet hasn’t taken to court.

By the looks of things, Moutet had been out indisposed  with pictures of his right arm in a sling online but the good news is that he is now fit and will be back playing tennis at the highest level.

What would be needed to be seen is how match-fit is Moutet – we have already seen how the likes of even the top players like Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev have struggled to be themselves following a bit of an injury break.

Watanuki Scrapes Through the Qualifiers

Having never been ranked in the top 100, Watanuki was forced to come through in the qualifiers here and those were two of the toughest successive matches he would have played in a while.

For starters, clay isn’t quite Watanuki’s forte and that could be seen from the starting odds at both the qualifiers.

In the first round, Watanuki was 10/11 to overcome clay-court specialist Federico Delbonis and he needed two cagey sets to get through. The second qualifier came against Pavel Kotov who was a 8/11 favourite but Watanuki overcame a first set deficit to win the final set tie-breaker.

Watanuki will now hope he can turn things around in the main draw of clay court competitions where he has won just two career matches before this. He has the advantage of coming up against a player who is on his way back into competitive tennis.

Moutet v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

No surprises here that Moutet is a favourite here and we will have to back him here given his opponent’s lack of tennis experience this season.
