Nuno Borges v Marcos Giron Head to Head

Borges and Giron have never faced off before this.

Borges Hoping to Improve His Clay Showing

Borges has a 4-6 career win-l0ss record on clay and this year he has won just one of the three matches he’s played on this surface. That victory came in the first round of the Barcelona Open but was sandwiched by two defeats on dirt on its either side.

At Estoril, it was a shock loss at the hands of Quentin Halys while in Barcelona, Carlos Alcaraz was an obvious winner over Borges.

Interestingly, Borges’ record in hardcourt competitions has been a lot better with the world number 74 winning a couple of rounds at the highest level and adding two Challenger titles to go with that as well.

What will be interesting to see if he can take advantage of his opponent’s usual issues on clay despite Giron having shown a different side of his over the last couple of weeks or so.

Giron’s Not Won a Lot on Clay

The difference between Giron’s preferences can be seen from the number of matches he’s won on hardcourt surfaces as compared to those won on clay. It’s 49 to nine.

And three of those wins on clay have come in this season for Giron.

The first came at the Houston Open where he overcame Emilio Gomez in the first round before going down to Tomas Machac. This was followed by back to back victories over Roberto Carballes Baena and Alexander Ritschard in Munich that took him to the quarterfinal stage.

Giron did make the second round of this competition in 2021 on what was his debut here but failed to qualify for the main draw last season.

He now faces an opponent who isn’t quite the best on clay but has shown better results on it than Giron for sure. Can he topple the Portuguese player here?

Borges v Giron Prediction and Tip

Borges will start a favourite but Giron has shown some grittiness in recent times and we could well see another of his fighting shows here. Three-setter could be on the cards.
