Mannarino Opens ATP Clay Court Campaign
While Mannarino did feature in a couple of Challenger competitions on clay, it’s not too much of a surprise to see that he has played in only one of the clay court tournaments on the ATP circuit this season.
Clay is obviously not Mannarino’s most favourite suit and this can be seen from how he has gone about his business over the last three seasons. Over the 17 matches he has played between 2020 and 2022, Mannarino has won a mere one encounter on dirt.
This year, probably knowing what his relation with clay, Mannarino opted to take part in the lower level of competitions but lost in the second round of the Oeiras Challenger.
Before that, the 46th-ranked Mannarino was forced to feature in the qualifiers of the Monte-Carlo Masters as well but fell without make it through to the next stage either.
With this being the case, Mannarino will know how difficult things could become for him against a player who relishes his time on dirt.

Etcheverry Has Made Two Finals This Season
Etcheverry has never won an ATP title but the two times he’s made the final of a tournament at the highest level have both been in 2023. And given his love for clay, needless to say they have both been on that very surface.
First at the Santiago Open, Etcheverry fell to Nicolas Jarry in the title decider and then made it all the way to the final in Houston where Frances Tiafoe got the better of him in two tie-breakers.
Overall, Etcheverry has an 11-6 win-loss record on clay for the season which includes a second round exit at the Barcelona Open last week where he lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
What his performances this season have meant is that Etcheverry is currently perched at 59th in the world on the ATP Rankings – his career-best. And now that he’s playing for the first time in Madrid, it gives him a chance to further improve upon his ranking especially given his golden chance to win this opener.
Mannarino v Etcheverry Prediction and Tip
