Venus Williams v Mona Barthel Head to Head
The two ladies have met thrice on the WTA Tour so far and not so surprisingly, Williams has been the victor on all three occasions. They last met in 2017 Australian Open.
Williams’ Best Performance of the Year
Venus’ performance in Indian Wells over the course of the last week or so has been nothing short of phenomenal. The quality of her tennis has been absolutely on par with several top players and given the way she is playing right now, it is hard to believe that she is 38.
She started off with an easy three-set win over Andrea Petkovic in the first round and set up a second-round clash with Petra Kvitova. In was an intense encounter that saw Williams completely in her element. After losing the first set, she staged a comeback and took the match 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
With that epic win over Kvitova, her path to the quarterfinal has arguably become easier. She easily dispatched Christina McHale in the third round and now, Barthel awaits her.
Williams spent the last season struggling heavily with her form. This year too, she started off with a rather mediocre performance in Auckland and Australian Open, losing respectively to Bianca Andreescu and Simona Halep in the third round.

Just like Venus, Barthel too has made some gains in Indian Wells. The last time she made it to the fourth round and beyond on the WTA Tour was back in September 2018 in Tashkent. Back then, she reached the semifinal before losing to Margarita Gasparyan.
Since that eventful run, Barthel has spent most of the time struggling to move past the early rounds. Before coming to Indian Wells, the World No. 97 managed to bag only two wins on the tour.
However, she managed to turn her form around here on the back of very discernible victories over Madison Keys and Julia Goerges. In both cases, she started as the underdog and managed to win in three sets to deliver her best result of the season.

Williams will be expected to win this one comfortably. She has the momentum, experience, and the psychological edge needed to dispatch Barthel comfortably.
