Anna Kalinskaya v Brenda Fruhvirtova Head to Head

Kalinskaya and Fruhvirtova have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Kalinskaya Hoping Charleston No Fluke

Over the years, Kalinskaya has steadily grown as a player and more recently was on the verge of breaking into the top 50 of the WTA Rankings. All of her sterling performances, however, have come in hardcourt competitions while she has usually struggled on clay.

Except when she turned out at the Charleston Open earlier this month where she reached the quarterfinals after winning three successive matches. And with two of those coming against Anhelina Kalinina and Victoria Azarenka, it’s no surprise that Kalinskaya would enter this tournament with a lot of confidence.

Earlier in the season, the Russian had shown what she’s capable of with wins over Jelena Ostapenko and Alycia Parks and fighting performances against Danielle Collins but she has been steady without being spectacular.

With Elena Rybakina waiting for the winner of this one in round two, can Kalinskaya glide through easily and give herself a chance to stun the in-form Kazakh?

Fruhvirtova Coming off a Superb Year at the Lower Circuit

Earlier this year, the 16-year-old won a title on the ITF circuit in Bengaluru. It had come in a hardcourt competition.

That, however, doesn’t even begin to tell the story of Fruhvirtova who is an ace player on clay-court tournaments. Last year, the then 15-year-old went on to win eight titles at the lower level and all of them came on clay.

What that meant was that Fruhvirtova, who had kick-started the 2022 season ranked outside the top 1000, ended it at 132nd in the world.

This year, Fruhvirtova hasn’t played a lot of tennis but now makes it to the Madrid Open as a wildcard entrant and that is a well-deserved entry into the tournament. It might be her first match on clay for the season but her opponent will know better than to take her lightly here.

Kalinskaya v Fruhvirtova Prediction and Tip

While Kalinskaya is a 2/5 favourite here, Fruhvirtova could be a tough nut to crack on clay. Expect this to go the distance and for Fruhvirtova to win at least a set.
