Lin Zhu v Rebecca Marino Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two spread across the ITF circuit, WTA tournament qualifiers and main draws. And Zhu leads 3-1 which includes two wins this season at the Australian Open and Monterrey Open.

They have never faced off on clay before this.

Zhu Enters Clay Court Season with Three Successive Losses

A fourth round appearance at the Australian Open and the winner of the Hua Hin Open, Zhu quickly climbed up to 33rd in the world as a result of those performances. More recently, she also made the semifinal in Monterrey.

Since then, however, Lin has gone into bit of a shell with her winning charge, having lost three matches in a row.

At Monterrey, her run was ended by Donna Vekic, before Lesia Tsurenko and Karolina Muchova got the better of her in her Indian Wells and Miami openers.

What will be interesting to see is how Zhu goes about her business on clay after having performed admirably in hardcourt competitions earlier this year. Last season, the Chinese player had featured in five tournaments on clay including one on the ITF circuit and won just one main draw match.

Can she shake off those poor performances?

Marino Hasn’t Won a Lot This Year

Having started the season perched at 63rd in the world, Marino hasn’t had the best of times in 2023 and has slowly fallen back to 79th on the WTA charts. In fact Marino has won a mere three main draw matches for the season.

And much like Zhu Lin, clay isn’t Marino’s most preferred surface either, with the Canadian having barely won a match on that surface.

Last season, for instance, Marino won a round in a WTA 125 tournament, and another at Karlsruhe but was knocked out in the first round at the French Open. In 2021, there was just one win in Charleston and while she also tried her hand on the ITF circuit, clay continued to be a problem for her.

It needs to be seen what Marino does in her first match of the season on clay with the slight positive news being her opponent’s lack of proficiency on this surface as well.

Zhu v Marino Prediction and Tip

Bookmakers are unable to decide one way or the other here with Zhu starting out a slight favourite. Backing her to win here too but could take three sets.
