Alize Cornet v Elena-Gabriela Ruse Head to Head
Corrnet leads 1-0, last beating Ruse in the 2021 Indian Wells Open in straight sets.

Cornet in a Serious Rut
It has been a rather disappointing start to the season for the current #71 Alize Cornet. She is set to play in Madrid after winning just three matches while losing seven in the first four months.
The 33-year-old picked a rare win in Charleston, most recently, Fiona Crawley in the opener. Cornet ended up losing the next match to Anna Kalinskaya.
That victory was preceded by a five-match losing streak spread across Australia, the Middle East, Europe, and the USA. Many of those losses came against lower-ranked players like Dayana Yastremska, Evgeniya Rodina, Camila Osorio, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
Clearly, the 2022 Australian Open quarterfinalist is going through form troubles, and it is not likely to improve on clay. Case in point, Cornet has never made it beyond the second round in Madrid. That said, she took home her sole WTA 1000 silverware in 2008 in her inaugural Italian Open.

Ruse Clears the Qualifiers
Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania had to start in the qualifiers. It was a relatively comfortable journey for her as she beat Ysaline Bonaventure and Leolia Jeanjean.
Now, she will make her main-draw debut in Madrid. By the looks of it, she does have a decent chance of going to round two.
Ruse has two clay WTA finals to her name, in addition to 7 on the ITF circuit. Moreover, she may be ranked World No. 159, but she has played a lot more tennis than Cornet.
The 25-year-old Romanian is 14-10 – reaching the second round in Monterrey and Auckland as a qualifier. She is also a former #51, capable of hitting hard.
