Laura Siegemund v Nadia Podoroska Head to Head

Siegemund leads 1-0, beating Podoroska last in the 2021 Italian Open.

Siegemund Shines in the Qualifiers

Germany’s Laura Siegemund hardly faced any difficulties in the prelims, as she dismissed Viktoria Kuzmova and Kamilla Rakhimova in straight sets. The 35-year-old will now play in her fifth Madrid Open – where her best result is reaching round three in 2016.

Last year, she fell a round before. The chances of her topping that this time are slim, considering the rocky season she has had.

She is now 12-10, on the back of a largely inconsistent season. Since reaching the third round in the Australian Open, Siegemund has not quite managed to win that many main-draw matches again.

Laura’s last appearance was in Charleston, where she fell to the 187th-ranked Sachia Vickery in three sets in the qualifiers. Before that, she made it to the second round (starting from the prelims) in Miami – losing to Paula Badosa.

On the doubles side, Siegemund has done a lot better – having won the Hobart International and taking home the runner-up silverware in Indian Wells.

Podoroska in a Decent Form

On the other hand, Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska is now #104 and 15-9 in 2023. The highlight is undoubtedly her Cali Challenger Cup in February.

Impressively, she was a semifinalist most recently in the ITF Chiasso – which has only bolstered her confidence on clay. Historically, she has always played well on this surface – evident from her 14 ITF finals (17 in total) and two WTA doubles finals.

Podoroska is also a 2020 French Open semifinalist and has made it as far as round three in Rome. With a decent clay pedigree, the former World No. 36 will make her debut in Madrid.

In all fairness, Nadia will start from a position of strength owing to her form on clay and dexterity.

Podoroska v Siegemund Prediction and Tip

Siegemund may find it hard to keep up with Podoroska – especially when she may be out of her element. Her experience, however, does give her some room to work with.

Expect an entertaining affair where Podoroska is the favourite to win – provided she can put in the effort.
