Kovinic and Errani have never faced off before this.

Kovinic Returning from ITF Title Win

Kovinic has had a good time on clay all career and it has been no different this season as she enters the Madrid Open on the back of a solid showing on the ITF circuit.

Ranked 57th in the world, Kovinic was knocked out in the second round at Zaragoza but came back well in Oeiras to win the title there.

Wins over Oceane Dodin, Eugenie Bouchard, Marie Bouzkova, Sara Sorribes Tormo and Rebeka Masarova puctuated that tournament victory – those are the kind of tricky opponents you want to beat to give you that kind of confidence.

Earlier this year, Kovinic had also made the semifinal at the Auckland Open, while finishing up a quarterfinalist in Lyon – giving her a reasonably good start. Can she continue in the same vein on the clay courts of the WTA circuit?

Errani Hoping to Make the Climb Back

Once ranked fifth in the world, Errani’s lack of results at the highest level ended up pushing her out to 366th on the WTA charts in 2019. Since then it has been a case of trying to make it back into the top 100 and getting direct entries at the Grand Slams.

It was towards the end of February this season that Errani finally managed to break through and enter the top 100. Slowly, but surely, she has climbed up each week and enters this tournament ranked 83rd in the world – her best ranking since 2018.

And that ascent, brought about by a steady improvement in her game was on show during the qualifiers here as well as Errani eased past Kristina Mladenovic and overcame Jodie Burrage to make the main draw.

Earlier this season, she had made the final of the WTA 125 tournament in San Luis Potosi and won a title on the ITF circuit as well. Can she now win her first match in Madrid since 2015?

Kovinic v Errani Prediction and Tip

This could be a tough one that goes the distance with neither player giving the other an inch. A three-setter expected.
