Alycia Parks v Anna Karolína Schmiedlová Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in the qualifiers of the Parma Open last season and Schmiedlova had won that in straight sets.

Parks in a Struggle Since Lyon Triumph

Almost against the run of play, Parks had surprised a few with her run at the Lyon Open earlier this year. She had managed to get past the likes of Petra Martic, Maryna Zanevska and then Caroline Garcia in the final to win that title.

Since then, however, Parks has struggled to get going.

In fact in the seven tournaments she has played in the period between the first week of February and now, Parks has won just one main draw match. As Stuttgart last week, Parks even failed to qualify for the tournament before getting a chance as a lucky loser.

She was routed by Qinwen Zheng in her opener there.

What is somewhat of a silver lining for Parks is she doesn’t have a lot of trouble playing on clay but given her form things could get difficult for the American.

Schmiedlová Hoping to Double Her Madrid Win Count

Once ranked 26th in the world, Schmiedlova has struggled to reach those glory days and has fallen to 96th at the moment thanks to her lack of consistency. In fact she has barely won a match at the highest level and that makes it rather tough for her to remain in the top 50 or so.

What that has meant is Schmiedlova was forced to go through the qualifiers to make it to the main draw. She did that well, defeating Laura Pigossi in straight sets and then edging past Kimberly Birrell in three sets in the second qualifying round.

That makes it her sixth appearance in the main draw of a competition this season. Of that, Schmiedlova has won just two matches.

Overall, Schmiedlova has featured in this tournament in Madrid on five previous occasions, winning just one match in the main draw. She will hope to take advantage of Parks’ recent debacle to be able to double that count.

Parks v Schmiedlová Prediction and Tip

Rather interestingly, it’s Schmiedlova who is the favourite here with the Slovak starting out at 9/20 odds. Backing her to win but we might see a three-setter too.
