Caroline Garcia v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

These two have never played at the highest level but have met three times otherwise. Putintseva has won them all but the last they met was in 2014.

Garcia Lost in Stuttgart Quarterfinal

Having won four titles last season, Garcia had climbed up to fourth in the world in 2022. This year, while she is yet to win a tournament, Garcia has 20 wins to nine defeats and that has ensured she is still in the top five of the ranking.

However, she now enters the Madrid Open, a tournament she had last played in 2019 and made the third round, on the back of a win and loss apiece on clay this season.

Garcia had overcome Tatjana Maria in the second round of the Stuttgart Open but then fell in the very next round to Anatasia Potapova.

This follows a whopping 11-3 win-loss record on clay for Garcia the previous season.

She now faces an opponent she has never beaten before at the lower levels but with the kind of form she has been in, this could be a good chance to turn things around.

Putintseva Eases Past Liu

It took Putintseva an hour and 45 minutes alright but she managed to make it past Claire Liu in the first round of the tournament here.

Putintseva shrugged off three breaks of serves in the encounter to register a 6-4, 6-4 win as she overcame her American opponent’s serve on five occasions.

Down 0-2 at one stage in the first stage, Putintseva came back to break Liu in the third game and then again in the seventh. And while she dropped her serve in the eighth, Putintseva came back to break Liu in the ninth to win the topsy-turvy opening set.

In the second, the two traded breaks in the first two games but a decisive break in the fifth game ensured there was no looking back for Putintseva.

This follows a second round exit at the Charleston Open for Putintseva, her only previous tournament on clay.

Given her serving issues, it might get rather difficult for her to overcome Garcia here.

Garcia v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

Garcia starts a favourite here and we will have to go with that given her superior record on clay and Putintseva’s issues with her serving.
