McNally Beats Galfi
21-year-old American Caty McNally ranked World No. 69, has had a sluggish start to her season with a 7-7 record. In Madrid, she aims to turn things around, but it won’t be easy, as her forte has always been playing on surfaces other than clay. Historically, most of her victories have been on hard courts.
But that did not stop her from beating Dalma Galif in the opener, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 in a little over two hours.
In 2023, McNally’s most impressive performance came in Merida, where she reached the semi-finals by defeating Lin Zhu, Katie Volynets, and Kimberly Birrell.
Her most recent tournament was in Charleston, where she fought hard but ultimately lost to Shelby Rogers in the second round in a gruelling three-set match.
However, on the doubles front, Caty has had a lot more success (ranked #22).
She has already appeared in ten finals, including two consecutive US Open runner-up finishes in 2021 and 2022. In addition, this season, she and Diane Parry won the Merida Open Doubles title.

Zheng Enjoys a Bye
Qinwen Zheng, who is the current World No. 24, is starting in Madrid with a record of 12-7. In March, she peaked at the 23rd positon, and if her form is any indication, she may break into the top 20 in a matter of weeks.
The 20-year-old Chinese has been a star in the making – admittedly, with many ups and downs. Case in point, she made it to the semifinal in Abu Dhabi and round four in Miami – but also lost in the early rounds in several other tournaments.
Nonetheless, Zheng did beat a few big names like Daria Kasatkina, Liudmila Samsonova, and Jelena Ostapenko in 2023.
On the whole, Qinwen has some experience with clay and looks superbly primed to win this one comfortably.
Zheng v McNally Prediction and Tip
