Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina v Albert Ramos-Vinolas Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before.

Ramos-Vinolas won their meeting on clay in Estoril in 2021, but a year later, on grass at the Queen’s Club, it was Davidovich-Fokina who emerged victorious.

Davidovich-Fokina Keen to Improve Madrid Record

Davidovich-Fokina was the recipient of a first round bye, which means that he has not matched his previous best in terms of this event.

The 23 year old Spaniard will consider that his record in Madrid should be better, given that he reached the last eight of the French Open in 2021, and was the beaten finalist in Monte Carlo last year.

His first clay court events of the season were a disappointment – he was beaten in the quarter-finals of Estoril by the Italian Marco Cecchinato, ranked 50 places below him, and then, he did not survive his first match in Monte Carlo this time round, well beaten by Karen Khachanov.

He would have taken more heart from what he achieved in Barcelona, where he got to the quarter-finals before losing in straight sets to Carlos Alcaraz, which is no disgrace.

Ramos-Vinolas Comes From Behind to Beat Ivashka

Ramos-Vinolas first competed in this tournament back in 2010, but, in all the intervening years, he has never been further than the second round in Madrid.

He made sure that he at least emulated that with a come from behind win against Ilya Ivashka, the world number 69, in their first round match.

In a first set largely dominated by serve, Ivashka secured the only break to secure the early advantage.

Ramos-Vinolas then had to defend three break points in his opening service game of the second set, but he held on, and, eventually, it went to a tie-break. It was the Spaniard who proved the stronger over the course of it to level the match.

By this stage the tide of the match had begun to turn, and, although Ivashka saved a break point early in the third set, it was only a matter of time before he dropped his serve.

Another break gave Ramos-Vinolas the chance to serve out, which he duly took.

Davidovich-Fokina v Ramos-Vinolas Prediction and Tip

Davidovich-Fokina will begin the heavy favourite to win this match against an opponent who has a poor history in Madrid, and is giving 12 years to the younger man.
