Coco Gauff v Irene Burillo Escorihuela Head to Head

Coco Gauff and Irene Burillo Escorihuela have not clashed at any level before this.

Gauff Looks to Bounce Back from Stuttgart

Coco Gauff’s European clay swing began with a tame defeat in Stuttgart at the hands of Anastasia Potapova. Even before her meeting against the rising young Russian, Gauff was outplayed by Veronika Kudermetova in the first round in Germany and only narrowly escaped with the win.

But there was no hiding from another lackluster display against Potapova in which Gauff’s forehand continued to be a major drawback in her game.

She’ll need a big improvement especially now that she is entering a critical juncture, needing to step up in her preparations for the French Open next month.

Gauff has a 2-2 lifetime record in Madrid, winning her two matches last year en route to the round of 16 where she was beaten by Simona Halep.

Escorihuela Upsets Big-Hitting Kanepi

It took the best part of two and a half hours, but Irene Burillo Escorihuela fended off the challenge of Kaia Kanepi to reach the second round of the Madrid Open.

She won 6-7 6-2 6-4 to record her first WTA win on her main draw debut. Considering that Kanepi wasn’t her initial first-round opponent until Shelby Rogers pulled out, it’s a fine win under the circumstances.

Escorihuella had entered the main draw pulling off the most stunning results in qualifying, beating two higher-ranked opponents including former World No. 40 Tereza Martincova.

Against Kanepi, she won 13 of her service games. The Estonian by contrast won 10. And the Spaniard was very effective off the return, winning 44% of those points. Most importantly, she managed to break the Kanepi serve five times from 12 chances.

Gauff v Escorihuela Prediction and Tip

Gauff will be wary of the threat posed by Escorihuela after a fabulous start to the week. But it’s unlikely she’ll keep the fairytale run going for one more round. The American should bounce back in resounding fashion.
