Pablo Carreno Busta v Oscar Otte Head to Head

Carreno Busta had defeated Otte in their only previous meeting that came at the 2022 Acapulco Open.

Carreno Busta Returns after Layoff

After having made a slow start to the season which saw Carreno-Busta lose three of his first four matches, the Spaniard was forced to withdraw from the Indian Wells Masters because of a muscle-related ailment.

And he hasn’t played since then, missing out on the Miami Masters and the start of the clay court swing in Europe making this his first match in nearly three months.

Overall, however, Carreno-Busta has a solid record on clay having won nearly 57% of his career matches on this surface. That is almost similar to his record in hardcourt competitions with the world number 22 having won three of his seven ATP titles on clay.

Interestingly, Carreno-Busta’s record in this tournament, played in his home country, is one of the poorest in the business for a player who was ranked 10th in the world. Having featured here in seven editions, Carreno-Busta has won just one main draw match here.

Can he double that count on his return?

Otte Scrapes Through Kotov

While he was an 8/11 favourite going into his opening round match, Otte took his time to get going as he was stretched to three sets by Pavel Kotov.

Otte came through in over two hours, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to register his maiden win in this tournament. It was also his first ever appearance here.

Up an early break, Otte eased to a win in the first set with only one break-point on offer for either player at that stage. Kotov frittered away a chance to break his opponent but converted the second as Otte served at 4-5 to stay in the set.

The German responded with a break in the very first game of the deciding set before clinching the match by serving out to love.

This was Otte’s second main draw win on clay for 2023, having stunned Sebastian Baez last week in Munich.

Can he take down Carreno Busta here?

Carreno Busta v Otte Prediction and Tip

Carreno Busta might be a bookmakers’ favourite but he has been away for long enough for us to take a step back on that. Backing Otte to win this, or at least grab a set.
