Jiri Lehecka v Alexander Shevchenko Head to Head

While these two have never faced off at the highest level they did play each other once on the Challenger circuit in 2021 and Lehecka had won that clay court match in straight sets.

Lehecka 4-2 on Clay

It’s been the kind of season which has seen Lehecka bloom into a player of repute. And while one always knew he was solid on hardcourt surfaces, this is the first time his prowess at the highest level of clay court competitions has been on show.

It’s early days yet, sure, given Lehecka has played just two ATP clay tournaments this year but he has shown he is here to compete.

At the Monte-Carlo Masters, Lehecka had gotten past Emil Ruusuvuori and Grigor Dimitrov to make the third round where it took the might of Taylor Fritz to down him. This was followed by a easy victories over Gael Monfils and Radu Albot in Banja Luka.

And now he enters the Madrid Masters as a seeded player which gave him an opening round bye. Quite a distinction for someone playing in this Masters tournament for the first time in his career.

He shouldn’t have too much trouble coming through here.

Shevchenko Revels on Clay

Last week Shevchenko broke into the top 100 of the ATP Rankings for the first time in his career. This was after he had begun the 2022 season at 328th in the world but a slew of solid results on clay at the lower level has given him a chance to rub shoulders with the finest players in the world.

And now, featuring in his first ever Masters 1000 tournament, Shevchenko has made it a step further by defeating American JJ Wolf in the first round.

What’s interesting to note is that despite his opponent’s better rank and higher pedigree, Shevchenko had come into the match as a favourite. And he played like one, needing an hour and 24 minutes to defeat Wolf 6-4, 6-4.

In the first set, one break-point is all that Shevchenko needed to clinch the lead and he then raced off to a 5-2 lead in the second set with two breaks of serves. Wolf broke back but Shevchenko closed out on his next service game.

Can the Russian 22-year-old now overcome Lehecka as well?

Lehecka v Shevchenko Prediction and Tip

While Shevchenko has shown what he is capable of, we think Lehecka has a solid game here and his opponent shouldn’t bother him too much on this occasion. Expecting a straight-set win for the Czech.
