Botic van de Zandschulp v Aslan Karatsev Head to Head
They are 1-1 from their previous meetings. Karatsev won at a lower level tournament in 2020, while Van de Zandschulp won at the tour-level in Munich this year. The Dutchman thrashed the Russian 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 16 in Munich.

Van de Zandschulp Will Hope to Put Munich Disappointment Behind Him
Botic Van de Zanschulp is set to make his second main draw appearance in Madrid. The world no. 29 made his debut in the tournament last year, but fell in round 2.
This year, the 27-year-old is a much improved player and has a better chance of going deeper in the tournament. He is the 23rd seed and therefore had a first round bye. He will begin his campaign in the second round on Saturday against a player he beat earlier this month on his way to a second ATP final in Munich. Van de Zandschulp had reached his maiden ATP final in Munich in 2022, but had to retire after just seven games in the final against Holer Rune.
This year, the two were back in the final. And it was a humdinger of a final, with Rune saving four match points in the final set and denying Van de Zandschulp a first title by edging the final set tiebreak.
The Dutch will be disappointed to have squandered four match points, but he would like to put the set back behind him quickly and start well in Madrid. He is in good form at the moment, with an overall record of 13-10 and a clay court record of 4-3 this season.
Can Van de Zanschulp start off in style?

Karatsev Continues to Surge Ahead
Aslan Karatsev battled past Laslo Djere in the opening round on Thursday to move into round two for the second time in Madrid. The 29-year-old had made it as far as the round of 16 on his debut in 2021. Last year though he suffered a first round loss to David Goffin.
Ranked no. 121, the former world no. 14 has won matches in just three of the eight tournaments that he has featured in this year.
Karatsev was a semifinalist in Pune, he went from the qualifiers to the round of 16 in Munich and has now won two qualifying round matches and the opening round in Madrid.
The Russian, who is 6-3 on clay this season, across levels, defeated Raul Brancaccio and Jan-Lennard Struff in the qualifying rounds respectively
Karatsev then needed two hours to oust Djere 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. Karatsev saved 7 of 8 break points and converted 2 of 3 to knock out the world no. 70. Can he beat another higher ranked player on Saturday?
Van de Zandschulp v Karatsev Prediction and Tip
Van de Zandschulp has been the better player over the last two years. The Dutchman is also in excellent form, and having scored a heavy win over Karatsev in Munich he will be high on confidence. Expect him to beat the Russian in straight sets once again.
