Irina-Camelia Begu v Shelby Rogers Head to Head

Rogers leads the head-to-head 2-1, but it is Begu who won the most recent encounter between the two. The Romanian came back from a set down to beat the American at the Adelaide International.

Rogers had won her matches in straight sets at the French Open in 2016 and in Indian Wells in 2021.

Begu Ousts Muchova

Irina Camelia Begu made a solid start to her Madrid campaign as she saw off Karolina Muchova in two tough sets on Thursday to advance to the round of 32.

The 31st seed Romanian, who had a first round bye, needed an hour and 51 minutes to send the world no. 52 packing. Begu was off to a flying start,, building a 4-1 lead in the opening set, thanks to a double break. But just when she was running away with the set, Muchova put up a stern resistance.

The Czech succeeded in getting a break back, but eventually it was Begu who held on to the lead to take a one-set-to-love lead. In the second set, both players traded a break in the middle of the set, but in the end it was the Romanian who ran away with the contest by winning the last three games in a row.

Begu won 6-4, 7-5 to end a four-match losing streak in Madrid. She lost in the second round in 2018 before making a hat-trick of first round exits. The world no. 35’s best effort in Madrid were the last eight finishes in 2015 and 2016.

Can she go that far this year? She has been inconsistent this season, and although she might win against Rogers, she will have her task cutout against the winer of Liudmilla Samsonova and Jelena Ostapenko in the round of 16.

Rogers Breezes Past Bogdan

World no. 38 Shelby Rogers breezed past Ana Bogdan in straight sets on Thursday to march into the third round. The 33rd seed, who had a first round bye, needed an hour and 18 minutes to script a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Rogers won 78% points on her first serve. She converted 6 of 10 break points and saved half of the four break points that she faced against the Romanian.

Thanks to the win the world no. 38 improved to 14-9, across levels, in 2023. She is 3-1 on clay, having made it to the round of 16 in Charleston.

Rogers’ best performance this year came in Abu Dhabi, where she went from qualifiers to the quarterfinals.

Thursday’s win was Rogers’ first win in Madrid after she made back-to-back first round exits over the last two editions. Can she add another win on Saturday?

Begu v Rogers Prediction and Tip

Begu is the more accomplished clay court player. She has played more on the surface recently than Rogers. In fact Begu had a 20-5 run on clay last season and that included a WTA title in Pallermo and a WTA 125 title in Bucharest. So it’s the Romanian who will hold slight edge in this contest.
