Daniil Medvedev v Andrea Vavassori Head to Head

Medvedev and Vavassori have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Medvedev Returns after Rune Loss

While Medvedev has shown his absolute dislike for clay court tennis in the past – and that has shown up in his results as well – he would be reasonably happy with his performance at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

After a first round bye, he had beaten Lorenzo Sonego rather easily in the second round there but more vitally overcame Alexander Zverev in an encounter that went into a final set tie-breaker. What made the win even more remarkable is Zverev had a couple of chances to serve for the match but came a cropper at both.

Medvedev went on to lose to Holger Rune in the quarterfinal and while he would later express he was happy to be out of there, one senses that Monte-Carlo run could well turn out to be a turning point in his clay court career.

He starts things off in the second round against a 27-year-old player who has never been in the top 150 but is coming off a win over Andy Murray.

Vavassori Continues to Make it Count on Clay

Vavassori’s only match outside of clay this season came in the first round of the Australian Open qualifiers. He lost that and since then hasn’t looked back.

Opting to feature in clay and clay alone, Vavassori has had to play in the qualifiers of events and Challenger tournaments and come through with 19 wins so far. He has lost only six matches on this surface.

And the latest of those victories came against Andy Murray in the first round here, defeating the Brit 6-2, 7-6 (7) following a couple of rounds of victories in the qualifiers.

In all three of his wins in this tournament so far, Vavassori has been stretched to a tie-breaker which is a good indication of how difficult it has been to break his serve too.

With a quarterfinal at Marrakesh earlier in this season, it’s safe to say Vavassori is having the year of his career and the question now is if he can top it up with a stunner against Medvedev.

Medvedev v Vavassori Prediction and Tip

Medvedev is 1/9 to win this and while we back him to complete the job, it still might not be the most straightforward of wins.
